Here is an AMCC Investor Presentation December 2014.
Page 9 is AMCC comparison between X - Gene and Thunder - X
X-Gene 3 is being developed during this timeframe and is listed on page 10.
According to the 2014 Presentation, If Thunder-X has not recently been upgraded, then I cannot see how it would be able to compare at all with X-Gene 3. Appreciate any comments on the comparison topic
Looking over the presentation, it seems like AMCC is very unimpressed with CAVM's cores, although the core-count is greater for AMCC's X-Gene 3 at 64 than with CAVM Thunder-X at just 48.
The articles seem to indicate that CAVM has targeted security applications with their chips, which Gopi said during one of the recent investment conferences, when asked about ThunderX as a competitor to X-Gene. Perhaps CAVM has segmented the market, but AMCC still has first-mover advantage.
Interesting article on the build-out of ARM Servers:
Chief ARM Architect for enterprise Linux giant Red Hat, Jon Masters stated back in the summer of 2014, "before ARM servers can ship in any significant volume, a standardized hardware platform that specifically targets the data center is a must".
